Carl Friedrich Abel wurde in Köthen als Sohn des berühmten Gambenvirtuosen Christian Ferdinand Abel geboren. Er soll, was nicht erwiesen ist, nach Bachs Umzug nach Leipzig sein Schüler an der dortigen Thomasschule gewesen sein. Gesichert jedoch ist, dass Abel auf Bachs Empfehlung an den Dirigenten Johann Adolph Hasse neun Jahre lang (1748–1757) als „Kammermusiker des Königs von Polen“ in der Dresdner Hofkapelle wirkte.
