Nils Bultmann is from Madison Wisconsin. He is a violist, improviser, and composer, committed to developing his own voice within the context of a wide variety of musical styles and art forms. His versatile background ranges from undergraduate studies in German literature, violist with the New World Symphony, to recording and touring with jazz Saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell. He has been active in collaborative projects of dance and film in addition to his love of the more standard classical music repertoire.
Nils recently completed his PHD in music composition at UC Berkeley working with Edmund Campion and David Wessel at the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies, creating interactive multi-media works and video installation pieces. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Aaron Copland Recording Grant for the recording and release of his acoustic works on Innova records, featuring his series of viola duets with Hank Dutt of the Kronos Quartet.
