The ballad «Rachel from Toledo» op. 16 for violoncello and piano was written in 1972 under the influence of the novel «The Jewess of Toledo» by Lion Feuchtwanger. It tells the unhappy love story between King Alfonso VIII of Castile and Rachel, the beautiful daughter of the Jewish merchant Jehuda Ibn Ezra. In 2006 the ballad was arranged by the composer as op. 16a for viola and piano. The viola part was arranged and reviewed by Hartmut Rohde.
